The phrase sounds total, and that is where most of the anxiety comes from. Homeowners hear rewiring and picture the house stripped to studs. In practice, whole-house rewiring of a finished home is disruptive enough that it is usually reserved for cases where the existing wiring is genuinely unsafe throughout, or where a major renovation has already opened the walls for other reasons. Far more often the honest recommendation is partial: specific circuits, specific rooms, specific problems addressed in a sensible order over a period of years rather than all at once.
That means the first useful step is not a quote, it is an assessment. Someone needs to see what is actually in your walls, panel, and boxes, because houses of the same age on the same street can differ dramatically depending on what previous owners did. A house that had a thorough update in the 1990s is in a different position than one that has never been touched, even if both were built in the same year.
Along the Wasatch Front you find every era of American residential wiring, sometimes stacked inside the same house. The oldest neighborhoods in Ogden, Salt Lake City, and Provo include homes that started with knob-and-tube and have been added to repeatedly. Mid-century homes across Davis County and the Salt Lake valley often have grounded circuits but a panel that was sized for a very different set of appliances. Newer Utah County subdivisions are generally in good shape electrically until you start adding large loads.
The most common findings are undramatic and worth knowing about anyway: two-prong ungrounded receptacles in bedrooms and living rooms, kitchens served by fewer circuits than modern practice calls for, no ground fault protection in bathrooms or garages, a panel with no empty spaces, and junction boxes that were closed up behind drywall during a past remodel. None of these is an emergency by itself. Together they describe a house that has outgrown its original electrical design.
Two wiring types generate most of the questions homeowners bring to us, and both are worth understanding without panic. Knob-and-tube is the oldest, recognizable by ceramic knobs and tubes and separately run conductors. It was competent for its era and its practical problems are modern ones: no equipment ground, insulation that degrades with age and heat, and a serious incompatibility with being buried in blown-in insulation. Insurers are widely aware of it and often ask directly.
Aluminum branch wiring came from a specific window of the late 1960s and 1970s and is a different situation. The conductor itself is not the issue so much as the connections, which can loosen and oxidize over time in ways that generate heat at devices and splices. Recognized remediation methods exist and are far less invasive than a full rewire. What matters in both cases is documentation: knowing what is actually in service, what has been abandoned in place, and having that on paper when your insurer asks.
The most visible sign of older wiring is a receptacle with two slots and no third opening. That means the circuit has no equipment grounding conductor, which was standard practice for a long time and is simply how the house was built. The consequence is that anything requiring a ground, which includes a great deal of modern electronics and any tool with a three-prong plug, has nowhere to send fault current.
The wrong fix, and an extremely common one, is to install a three-prong receptacle on the ungrounded circuit anyway. It fits, everything plugs in, and the house now lies to every device connected to it. Recognized alternatives exist, and they involve specific protection and labeling requirements rather than pretending a ground is present. Which approach fits your house depends on what is in the box and how the circuit is routed, which again is why the assessment comes before the plan.
When rewiring is genuinely warranted, the sequence usually starts at the panel, because there is little point running new circuits into equipment that cannot accept them. From there the work follows priority: kitchens, bathrooms, laundry, and any circuit showing signs of heat, then bedrooms and living spaces, then convenience additions. Attics, basements, and crawlspaces become the highways, which is why homes with accessible attics are much less disruptive to rewire than those without.
Timing matters too. If you are already planning to open walls for a remodel, refinish a basement, or replace flooring, that is the cheapest moment to address wiring, because the access is free. The same is true of a roof or siding project on an exterior wall. An electrician who knows your longer-term plans can often stage the work so that the most invasive parts happen while something is already apart.
Look where wiring is visible: an unfinished basement ceiling, an attic, or inside the panel. Ceramic knobs and tubes with separate conductors indicate knob-and-tube. Cable printed with markings indicating aluminum conductors points at aluminum branch wiring. That said, what is visible in one location may not represent the whole house, since additions and remodels layer eras together. An assessment is more reliable than a glance.
That is between you and your insurer, and policies differ. What is consistent is that knob-and-tube and certain older panel types draw questions, and some carriers decline or surcharge based on them. Having documentation from an electrician about what is in service, what has been abandoned, and what has been remediated puts you in a much better position than guessing on a form.
