Recessed cans, fixture replacements, under-cabinet runs, exterior and landscape lighting, and the switching behind all of it. Fixtures usually fail at a connection or a control rather than the bulb, which is why a straight swap sometimes does not hold.

Lighting is the part of electrical work you actually look at every day, and it is the part where the wiring and the design decisions are hardest to separate. A room lit by one fixture in the ceiling behaves differently than the same room with light layered across a counter, a reading chair, and a hallway. Getting there is partly a question of fixtures and partly a question of switching: what turns on with what, from which doorway, and how far down it dims before it starts to flicker or hum.

Fixtures also fail in patterns worth knowing. When a light stops working, the bulb is the obvious suspect and often the wrong one. Sockets corrode, integrated LED drivers reach the end of their lives, connections in the ceiling box work loose from vibration and heat, and dimmers that were never matched to the load run hot and buzz. That is why swapping the bulb sometimes fixes nothing, and why a fixture that keeps eating bulbs is telling you about the connection or the control rather than the lamp.

What Lighting Work Covers

  • Recessed lighting and layout — Placement, spacing, and beam direction decide whether a room feels evenly lit or spotted. Ceiling access, insulation contact, and joist positions shape what is possible.
  • Fixture replacement and relocation — New fixtures on existing boxes, and moving a fixture when the box is in the wrong place, which is common over dining tables and kitchen islands.
  • Under-cabinet and task lighting — Counters and work areas need light coming from the right side to avoid working in your own shadow. Power routing and switch placement are the real design work here.
  • Exterior, security, and landscape lighting — Weather-rated fixtures, correctly protected outdoor circuits, and controls that make sense at night. Aiming matters as much as the fixture in exterior work.
  • Dimmers and smart switches — Not every dimmer suits every load, and mismatched pairings cause buzzing, flicker at the low end, and short lives. The control and the fixture need to be chosen together.
  • Switch legs and three-way circuits — Adding a switch at the other end of a hallway or room, or repairing three-way and four-way arrangements that have been miswired at some point in the past.

How a Lighting Job Gets Planned

  1. Decide what the light has to do — General illumination, task light over a work surface, and accent light are three different jobs. Most rooms want more than one of them, and that shapes fixture choice before anything is bought.
  2. Plan the switching — Which fixtures are grouped, which doorways control them, and what dims. Getting this right on paper is far cheaper than discovering the wrong arrangement after the ceiling is closed.
  3. Rough in or retrofit — New construction and open ceilings allow the ideal layout. Finished ceilings call for retrofit housings and careful routing that respects insulation, framing, and existing circuits.
  4. Trim, aim, and dial in — Fixtures get trimmed out, adjustable heads get aimed at what they are meant to light, and dimmers are set and tested through their full range for flicker and noise.

What it costs

Lighting pricing tracks access more than fixture count. An open ceiling, an attic above, or an unfinished basement below makes routing straightforward. A finished ceiling with a room above it means fishing wire, cutting access holes, and repairing finish afterward. Adding a switch where none exists means getting a conductor to that wall, which can be simple or involved depending on framing. Insulation contact and clearance requirements affect which recessed housings can be used. If the new lighting exceeds what the existing circuit should carry, a new circuit enters the scope, and any permit and inspection your jurisdiction requires applies to that.

Questions people ask

My new LED bulbs flicker on a dimmer that worked fine before. Why?

Because the dimmer was almost certainly designed for the old load and is not compatible with the new one. LED loads are much smaller and behave differently, and many older dimmers cannot control them smoothly at the low end. Replacing the dimmer with one rated for LED loads, and matching it to the specific fixtures, usually resolves it.

A ceiling fixture keeps going through bulbs. Is that the fixture's fault?

Often, yes. Repeated bulb failure in one location usually points at heat in an enclosed fixture, a worn or corroded socket, vibration, or a loose connection in the ceiling box. It is worth having the box opened rather than continuing to buy bulbs, since a loose connection generating heat is a problem well beyond the inconvenience.

Can recessed lights go in a ceiling that has a room above it?

Usually. It means retrofit housings and fishing the wiring through the ceiling cavity rather than working from above, so the work is slower and access holes may be needed. Joist locations and any existing ductwork or plumbing set the practical limits on where fixtures can land, which is why layout gets confirmed before cutting.

Why does my three-way hallway switch only work if the other switch is in one position?

That is the classic signature of a three-way circuit wired incorrectly, often during a past fixture or switch replacement where the traveler and common conductors got mixed up. It is a wiring problem rather than a switch problem, and correcting it means identifying which conductor is which at both boxes and re-landing them properly.
